Why Supporting Mental Health is a Must
By Lisa Suter
Thanks to efforts like Mental Health Month, there’s an increased awareness that mental health is something everyone should care about. To improve education on the topic and increase support, many health plans, providers and employers are focusing on mental health as part of a holistic health approach.
Something we can all relate to with regards to mental health is stress. To better understand the state of stress in America, Welltok surveyed +1,000 full-time workers and uncovered some alarming statistics
- 64% feel stressed at work, especially women and middle-aged workers
- 30% say work stress is negatively impacting their life and only 16% strongly agree they know where to find health and wellbeing resources provided by their employer
- 35% have seriously considered changing their work situation due to stress (including more than 50% of millennials)
High rates of stress are problematic. While not all stress is bad, long-term stress can affect an individual’s health by leading to sleep problems, chronic conditions and other negative health impacts. It can also lower their productivity on the job and increase healthcare costs.
What to Consider When Developing a Mental Health Strategy
Dealing with stress is just the tip of the iceberg when discussing mental health. Depression, addiction and other disorders must also be considered when building a mental health support strategy. The numbers speak for themselves:
- 10% of Americans suffer from depression while only 50% of them get diagnosed and receive treatment1
- 7 million Americans (aged 12 and over) are battling substance abuse2
- Device addiction is on the rise in both teens (50%) and adults (27%)3
- More than 50% of us will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in our lifetime4
And while 56% of American adults have the desire to and/or have sought treatment for themselves or others, lack of access continues to be a barrier to care.5
Health plans, providers and employers alike can respond by better understanding who is experiencing poor mental health, investing in relevant resources to support them, and by making it easy for consumers to find and use programming.
